Before Buying a Storage Padlock Consider These 8 Points

Deciding on the right padlock for storage can be a difficult choice as there are so many on the market that all seem to offer a good level of security for all budgets.
There are a number of points to consider before buying your storage padlock, which we’ve listed below.

#1: The Level of Security You Need
Think about what level of security your storage unit will need. Are you storing something expensive in your lockup? Is it something that isn’t too valuable? Does the storage unit already provide some level of security, such as CCTV or a standard locking system?
If your storage unit already has a basic level of security then you might not need a padlock. If you’re only storing non-valuable items then opting for a cheaper padlock will probably be enough.
If there’s no basic security in your unit or you’re storing something valuable then it would be a good idea to buy a more expensive padlock that provides a much higher level of protection.
#2: Exposed or Shrouded Shackle
The weakest part of all padlocks is the shackle. The shackle is the part of the lock that is U-shaped and actually keeps the door secured to the lock. One of the most common ways thieves break locks is by cutting the shackle with bolt croppers.
A shackle that is exposed will be susceptible to cutting or drilling attacks. Some shackles will be reinforced with hardened steel, making it much harder to break, but it’s still possible given the right tools and enough time. Exposed shackle padlocks tend to be cheaper as they offer less security and are cheaper to produce than a shrouded shackle padlock.
A shrouded shackle mitigates this issue to a certain degree by keeping the shackle covered, thus making any attempts at drilling or cutting futile. There’s a lot less space for somebody to use bolt cutters and the material used for the shroud is typically very strong. These are more expensive but they offer a lot more protection.
Choosing between an exposed or shrouded shackle will come down to two things: how big your budget is and how much security you need. If you can afford a padlock with a shrouded shackle then we would certainly recommend buying one.
#3: Choosing The Right Sized Padlock
Consider where you’ll be using the padlock. You need to find out whether it will not only fit the door you’re trying to secure but also if it’s the appropriate size for what you’re trying to achieve.
You will find some padlocks have a very short shackle, meaning there’s not much space to fit the padlock. On top of this, using a small locker style padlock to protect a storage unit would be an invitation for thieves to try to attack it. A big beefy padlock will put potential thieves off just by looking at it.
#4: Combination Padlock or Keyed Padlock
Combination padlocks are very convenient as they don’t require a key to unlock them. You simply have to remember the combination code you set. This can be useful if you don’t want to look after a key, but if you forget your combination you’re out of luck.
Keyed padlocks, on the other hand, tend to be built more securely than combination locks.
Keyed padlocks are less easily damaged with bolt croppers and they tend to have more additional protections than combination padlocks.
Our recommendation is to use combination locks only for places such as school or gym lockers. Using a combination padlock to secure high-value items in a storage unit is asking for trouble. You’ll be better off purchasing a padlock that uses unique keys to best secure a storage unit.
#5: Disc Padlocks or Standard Padlocks
You may be wondering whether disc padlocks are better than standard padlocks. The answer is that disc padlocks are indeed more secure than standard padlocks, as they provide a lot less space for bolt croppers to cut into. Standard padlocks are easier to cut because there’s plenty of space to attack them.
These days disc padlocks have become a very popular choice for those wanting to secure their storage units. You will just need to confirm that the disc padlock will actually fit your unit, due to them having less space around the shackle.
#6: Is Your Storage Unit Exposed to The Outside Elements
The location of your unit plays a part in determining what kind of padlock to get for your storage unit. If it’s situated indoors then there’s no need to worry about the weather damaging the lock.
If your unit is outside and the door is exposed to the weather then buying a weatherproof padlock is a must, otherwise, over time it will become damaged.
#7: Corrosion and Rust Can Damage a Lock
Following on from point 7, your lock can be easily damaged by rust and corrosion. If the padlock doesn’t have any protections against either, and it’s used outside, over time it will certainly be susceptible to rusting and corrosion. Ultimately this damages the lock until it becomes unusable or insecure.
Locks that are corrosion and rust-resistant are always made from higher quality materials, such as stainless steel and zinc. Some will use plastic covers to keep critical parts sheltered from the weather.
#8: Stick to Your Budget
If you’re anything like me, I set a budget and then go over it when I read about the features of the more expensive products. If you have a set budget, stick to it. There are great quality padlocks to suit every budget. Of course, the more you spend the better the padlock will be in terms of features and security, however, the cheaper padlocks can still provide enough security for your needs.
The prices of padlocks vary greatly, starting at just $5 for the most basic ones all the way up to thousands of dollars for the most complex and secure ones. Some of the most expensive ones are used for military-grade applications, which is definitely overkill for most people.
Don’t go for the absolute cheapest as it’ll likely be rubbish, but a cheap padlock will be fine if it has good reviews and ratings.
Security Precautions to Consider
You can have the best storage padlock that money can buy and it can be rendered useless if you don’t take some additional security precautions.
Don’t Buy Second Hand Locks
With a second-hand lock, you have absolutely no idea if somebody has had a spare key cut.
This is a big potential risk if the person has spare keys made and they know where you’ll be using the padlock.
Keep The Keys Secure
What good is a super-secure padlock if you are careless with the keys? Make sure you keep your key located in a safe place when not using it, ideally on a keychain with your other keys. Be wary of who you let use the key unsupervised, as an unscrupulous person can easily get a copy made.
Rent a Good Quality Storage Unit
You can only do so much using a good quality padlock. The quality of your storage unit will also play a part in keeping your possessions secure. Does the storage unit have additional security measures, such as closed-circuit cameras or additional locks? Is it located inside or outside? Is it in a well-lit area? These are all questions you need to consider when renting a unit.

In Summary

We hope that our list of best storage padlocks has been helpful in deciding which padlock will be best suited to your personal needs.
Remember to consider all the relevant factors when buying a storage padlock. It must offer adequate security for your needs, be able to stand up to the elements if used outdoors and of course be within your personal budget.
Before hitting buy on a padlock double-check what others have said about them to get a better idea of how it fares in the real world.
